In spring 2026, MMT will bring life in small-town Minnesota to toe-tapping life with the Twin Cities premiere of Grumpy Old Men: The Musical. Based on the classic 1993 film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, this outrageous show tells the tale of Max and John, two neighbors who have been feuding for most of their lives. When an intriguing new woman comes to town, their feud reaches new heights as they face-off as romantic rivals. With a book by Dan Remmes and a rollicking score by Neil Berg and Nick Meglin, Grumpy Old Men is sure to delight Twin Cities audiences. Grumpy Old Men: The Musical will be directed by Kari Steinbach, who recently helmed Striking 12 for MMT in 2022.

The season started with a staged concert of Anyone Can Whistle. We revisited Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents’ legendary Broadway flop in a stripped-down presentation that highlighted the groundbreaking score that foreshadows Sondheim’s incredible work in the 1970s, even while staying true to its Golden Age roots. This madcap tale of a bankrupt town, phony miracles and the dangers of conformity was directed by Max Wojtanowicz, with music direction by Walter Tambor.
