Following the success of the local premiere of “Be More Chill” this past April, and continuing the company’s mission to bring new or rarely-seen works of musical theatre to Twin Cities audiences, Minneapolis Musical Theatre (MMT) is pleased to announce three area premieres as part of the upcoming 2019-2020 season.

Night of the Living Dead! The Musical!
October 4-27, 2019

Phoenix Theater
2605 Hennepin Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55408

Celebrate the Halloween season with this campy new adaptation of the classic George Romero zombie film, with Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jordan Wolfe. Equal parts homage and parody – the show enjoyed a brief Off-Broadway run earlier this year. Our production will be directed by longtime MMT collaborator Ryan McGuire Grimes (“The Toxic Avenger,” “Eating Raoul”).

Daddy Long Legs
February 7-29, 2020

James J. Hill House
240 Summit Ave.
St. Paul, MN 55102

Minneapolis Musical Theatre heads across the river to St. Paul to produce “Daddy Long Legs” at the Historic James J. Hill House on Summit Avenue. “Daddy Long Legs” features music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and a book by John Caird (both nominated for Tony Awards in 2001 for their work on “Jane Eyre”) and is based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster. This charming two person chamber musical follows Jerusha Abbott, who has grown up in an orphanage but is sent to college by a mysterious benefactor so she may learn to be a writer. Along the way, she emerges as a fiercely independent, intelligent “New Woman.” “Daddy Long Legs” ran Off-Broadway in 2015-2016 and was nominated for several awards. It won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical. Amanda Weis, who last worked with MMT as Music Director for the smash hit “High Fidelity” at The Electric Fetus in 2018 will be directing the production. The James J. Hill House will provide the perfect, period-appropriate, intimate setting for this unique turn-of-the-century love story.

Lizzie
March 27-April 19, 2020

The TEK BOX at The Cowles Center
528 Hennepin Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55403

Closing the season at the TEK BOX on the 2nd floor of the Cowles Center in Downtown Minneapolis: “Lizzie” by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, Tim Maner, and Alan Stevens Hewitt. This Victorian-Punk Rock musical retelling of the story of Lizzie Borden has been lauded by fans and critics, alike.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be able to share these three musicals with Twin Cities audiences,” says MMT Artistic Director Joe Hendren. “These shows are all so unique and distinct from one-another, in terms of story, style, music, and venue. Audiences are in for a treat. We also saw such tremendous response to “Be More Chill” – particularly from younger audience members. It is our ardent hope that we are offering something for everyone this season.”

Tickets are now on sale for Daddy Long Legs and Lizzie.
